Art Video of the Week

So I am going to try and show a video that interests me of an artist, musican, or whatever…

I will also have some follow up questions below the video so maybe we can get a discussion going.

This video is one of a painter working out of Asheville North Carolina named Jonas Gerard. Gerard has been inspirational to me as well as I’m sure, several other artists.

Follow Up Questions:

1. Do you think the music does more of the painting than him? If so why?
2. Why do you think he enjoys painting in front of a live audience?
3. Finally, do you like his artwork? Explain why you do or do not.

I hope to hear from you!

  1. Cool video. Is the music doing the painting? Hardly.

We can’t know what music he was listening to while painting (it’s clearly not what we’re hearing, since the video has been edited). From his little dance moves it would seem he’s listening to something with a beat.

I listen to music when I paint too, and I’m pretty sure it’s not the music that’s doing the painting. It just helps boost my energy a little, or helps me get into the flow.

Mr. Gerard probably gets a high from working live in front of an audience. A bit of a showoff, but that’s okay. If that’s what he wants to do, I say more power to him.

  2. Thanks Barbara for the comment! I don’t that was the original music either, and I do agree that it is probably a bit narcissistic of him to paint live like that, but like you said it works for him. Overall he has influenced my work as of late in a fairly profound way
